European Court of Human Rights: Lithuania must pay Saudi Arabian citizen for secret detention
The European Court of Human Rights ruled on Tuesday that Lithuania is obliged to pay tens of thousands of euros to Saudi Arabian citizen Abdul Rahim Hussein Al-Nashiri. This person was unlawfully held in a secret CIA facility on Lithuanian territory.
The court established that more than two decades ago, Al-Nashiri was detained without legal grounds in a secret CIA detention facility operating in the Lithuanian Republic. The detention lasted longer than five months.
The Saudi Arabian citizen was suspected in connection with a 2000 planned attack on a US military vessel. Lithuanian state radio and television (LRT) reported on this court verdict.
This ruling once again confirms that Lithuanian institutions participated in the CIA's unlawful detention programme and must therefore bear responsibility for it.
