Indian citizen charged with large-scale cocaine smuggling
Prosecutors from the Kaunas Regional Prosecutor's Office have completed their investigation and transferred the case to court. A citizen of a foreign state, originally from India, is accused of large-scale drug trafficking.
Last October, law enforcement officers conducted searches at three locations – the capital, Kaišiadorys Municipality, and the suspect's residence. During the operation, more than seven kilograms of crystallised substance were found and confiscated. Expert examination confirmed that it contained a very large quantity of cocaine.
The narcotics were hidden in various places: a rucksack, a vehicle interior, a boot, and even in a basket intended for food delivery.
Investigators established that the drugs could have been transported from Vilnius to Kaišiadorys district, where part of the shipment could have been prepared for further distribution.
The accused is charged under Article 260 of the Criminal Code. For such an offence, a lengthy prison sentence is threatened – from ten to fifteen years.
The trial will be heard by Kaunas Regional Court.
The investigation was led by prosecutor Nomeda Urbonavičienė from the Organised Crime and Corruption Investigation Division of the Kaunas Regional Prosecutor's Office. Operational activities were conducted by officers from the Criminal Police of Kaunas District Police Commissariat, working in the organised crime investigation department.
