Law enforcement officials in the port city began an investigation in early June into a suspected illegal business involving excisable goods. After receiving information that contraband alcoholic beverages and cigarettes were allegedly being sold in Klaipėda, officers took action in conjunction with prosecutors.

In mid-June, Klaipėda criminal investigators conducted raids, during which they confiscated approximately four thousand litres of various spirits. Additionally, 217 blocks of cigarettes were found – some of them lacked mandatory Lithuanian tax stamps, whilst others bore foreign country marks. Officers also seized over 900 euros in cash, electronic cigarettes with liquid for refilling them, and approximately 300 litres of diesel.

During the investigation, a man born in 1980 was detained. A court decided to remand him in custody for ten days. The criminal code stipulates the most severe punishment for such offences – imprisonment of up to eight years.
