Lithuanian police are drawing citizens' attention to rapidly evolving fraud tactics. Criminals are increasingly using advanced technologies to make their scams more convincing.
One of the latest schemes involves telephone calls in which callers impersonate representatives of major technology companies. The callers report that a newly connected device has been added to the user's account. During the conversation, they attempt to convince the victim that banks, law enforcement and even family members cannot be trusted. The aim is to obtain login credentials, encourage the opening of new accounts or induce the transfer of money to alleged couriers.
Furthermore, criminals continue to successfully impersonate employees of Lithuanian Post. They send false messages, write emails and call residents, attempting to extract personal information or financial resources.
Another fraud method has been observed in the capital – counterfeit JUDU stickers with QR codes are being affixed to vehicles. When drivers scan them, they are taken to fake websites created to steal their data.
Officers recommend agreeing in advance with loved ones on secret words or codes. This would help distinguish genuine calls from fraudulent ones, especially given that criminals have already begun using tools that allow them to reproduce familiar voices.
