The European Court of Human Rights has ruled that Lithuania must pay 30,000 euros to a Saudi Arabian citizen who was held in a secret CIA detention centre on Lithuanian territory twenty years ago.

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has decided that the Lithuanian state must pay 30,000 euros in compensation to Saudi Arabian citizen Abdul Al-Nashiri. This individual, suspected of terrorist activity, was detained and held twenty years ago in a secret prison facility set up by the United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in Lithuania.
In addition to the monetary compensation, the court has also instructed Lithuanian institutions to officially contact the United States authorities. The aim is to obtain guarantees that A. Al-Nashiri will not be sentenced to death.
Asta Skaisgirytė, the President's chief foreign policy adviser, stated publicly on Tuesday that she doubted whether Lithuania was obliged to implement this part of the ECtHR ruling without delay. According to her, before taking any steps towards Washington, it is necessary to carefully consider all aspects of the case. "Discussions have not yet taken place, so I will not rush to give an answer," the adviser added in an interview to the radio.
