On 8 June, police in Utena attempted to stop a vehicle transporting eight illegal migrants. The driver disregarded the lawful order from officers and fled. During the incident, he operated the vehicle dangerously, posing a threat to other road users. The pursuit ended when the car crashed into the wall of a residential house.
The Utena District Police Headquarters released video footage showing the extreme pursuit situation. During the chase, the driver, eight passengers and bystanders on the road faced real danger – in total, at least nine people's lives were at risk.
Officers note that in such cases, decisions must be made in an instant. This requires professionalism, preparedness, courage and the ability to act immediately with a cool head.
Police urge all road users to give way immediately when they see the flashing lights of emergency services and hear audible signals.
