Vytautas Magnus University (VDU) received a letter written in English last week containing threats of violence if a student were not allowed to defend his final thesis. Following this incident, security at the university has been tightened and police officers have been informed of the event.
According to news portal "Kas vyksta Kaune", the letter received at the end of last week contained threats of violence. From the content of the letter it is evident that a foreign student is dissatisfied with the university's decision not to allow him to complete his studies.
Representatives of VDU confirmed that the student reacted inadequately to the news that his final thesis does not meet the required standards and therefore will not be given the opportunity to defend it. In response, he sent a threatening letter.
"Having assessed the seriousness of the situation, we took immediate preventative measures – we strengthened security, contacted the police, which is currently conducting an investigation," stated university representatives.
Kaunas District Police Headquarters confirmed that it received a report of the threat. At present, officers are clarifying all circumstances of the incident.
The police also indicated that it currently has no information as to whether the person is banned from visiting the university. "We report such cases to embassies when individuals are detained," stated police representatives.
