Drunk 19-year-old woman crashes BMW into pole in Vilnius: two passengers die, driver faces up to 10 years imprisonment

In the early hours of Saturday morning in Vilnius's Žirmūnai district, a luxury hybrid automobile BMW 530e crashed into an electricity pole and went up in flames. The accident claimed two young lives – a 21-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman. The nineteen-year-old Šarlotė Liman, who was sitting in the driver's seat, survived.
The incident occurred between four and five o'clock in the morning. The girl, who had exited the damaged car on her own, was walking around the scene of the accident. A subsequent investigation showed that she was slightly intoxicated – 0.58 per mille of alcohol was found in her body. While specialist services were en route, local residents attempted to extinguish the flames.
Representatives of the Vilnius Regional Prosecutor's Office reported that the young driver admits her guilt, but has not yet provided official testimony to investigators. She had no previous criminal record. There is currently no information about possible intoxication from psychoactive substances – this will be clarified during further investigation.
The suspect's stepfather told the portal 15min.lt that before the tragedy there were street races on the road, and that drugs had allegedly been used previously. However, tests carried out a few hours later detected no banned substances. According to witnesses, the driver explained that another vehicle had forced her against the kerb and that there was no possibility to manoeuvre.
The father of the deceased passenger told the portal lrytas.lt that his son – a judo master who worked in a bank and studied at university – was not acquainted with the driver. One of the accident witnesses, who was in the friends' group, admitted: "My best friend died in the crash in front of my eyes. We could not save him, I could not save him. I did everything I could."
Currently, precautionary measures have been imposed on the 19-year-old: her documents have been seized, she has signed a written commitment not to leave the country, and her driving licence has been temporarily suspended. For the death of two people due to reckless driving, she faces imprisonment for up to ten years.
