Businessman Fenech acquitted in Malta journalist murder case
Nearly nine years after the car bombing of Daphne Caruana Galizia, a jury has acquitted Yorgen Fenech of murder charges. The trial is regarded as possibly the most spectacular murder case in Malta's history.
Acquittal for Fenech in Caruana Galizia murder trial
Yorgen Fenech, a 44-year-old businessman, has been acquitted in Valletta of allegations that he was the mastermind behind the car bombing of Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia. According to ORF, a jury today cleared him both of complicity in murder and of criminal conspiracy.
Caruana Galizia was blown up near her home on 16 October 2017. The 53-year-old was regarded as one of Malta's most prominent investigative reporters and had researched corruption in politics and business.
The acquittal marks an unexpected turn in what is arguably the most spectacular murder case in the history of the small EU state. Three contract killers pleaded guilty several years ago and are serving prison sentences of between 15 and 40 years. Two further men who were convicted of supplying the bomb received life sentences.
The trial against Fenech ranks among the longest murder proceedings in Maltese legal history.
