The tragedy occurred on 10 June in one of the towns in Augustów County. A 27-year-old man threw his six-month-old child onto the floor. The mother called an ambulance. The infant, in a serious condition, was taken to hospital where he continues to receive treatment. Officers detained both parents. The woman was questioned as a witness and released. The man was charged with attempted murder committed with particular cruelty, along with causing serious bodily harm.
The District Court in Augustów, acting on a motion from the prosecutor's office, ordered the defendant to be remanded in custody for a period of three months. The acts he is accused of carry a sentence of ten to thirty years' imprisonment or life imprisonment.
This is the second case of violence against a minor in the area in the last six months. At the end of January in the same county, a 41-year-old man stabbed his six-year-old daughter in the back in the flat of his former live-in partner. The woman attempted to restrain the aggressor. The girl survived the attack, and the perpetrator was sent to a psychiatric facility.
