LGBTQ+ Federation demands investigation into stabbing death of "Pupy" in San Juan

Authorities urged to investigate hate crime angle in death of "Pupy" in Las Margaritas

Puerto Rico's LGBTQ+ Federation demanded on Saturday that authorities investigate "all angles, including those of hate and gender-based violence" in the death of Ernesto "Pupy" Hernández López, according to telemundopr.com. The crime occurred on Friday in the Las Margaritas residential complex in San Juan.

Hernández López's body was found at midday on Friday following a call to the Police tip line. The police report indicated that he had several stab wounds.

"After confirming that he was a member of our LGBTQ+ community and in accordance with the protocols established by the Police and the Department of Justice, we are asking that all angles be investigated, including those of hate and gender-based violence. We hope they fulfil their duty and justice is served in this case," stated Pedro Julio Serrano, president of the Federation, in a written statement.

Serrano further noted that authorities "almost never" identify LGBTQ+ persons in their incident reports or in their investigations.

"Almost every time an LGBTQ+ person is murdered it is the community itself or their loved ones who identify their sexual orientation or gender identity. This is a key piece in the investigation in order to clarify the case and seek justice," added the organisation leader.
