Dominican citizen on list of most wanted for pandemic fraud in Puerto Rico

U.S. federal authorities are seeking Dominican citizen Juan Ignacio de la Cruz David, accused of defrauding more than $133,000 from Puerto Rico's unemployment assistance programmes during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to remolacha.net.

De la Cruz David was recently included on the list of 16 "most wanted" by the Office of the Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Labour (DOL-OIG). Inspector General Anthony D'Esposito announced his inclusion on that list.

According to the record released by the agency, the suspect allegedly used false Social Security numbers to process and irregularly collect multiple economic assistance cheques intended for people who lost their jobs or saw their incomes reduced during the health emergency.

The federal prosecutor's office for the District of Puerto Rico filed a formal indictment against him in 2022 for the crimes of theft of government funds and mail fraud. Since then, De la Cruz David has remained a fugitive and his whereabouts are unknown to authorities.

According to information released by investigators, the wanted man was born on 31 July 1978, has brown eyes, is approximately 1.78 metres tall and weighs approximately 86 kilogrammes.

Given the inability to locate the suspect, the Office of the Inspector General of the Department of Labour is requesting the collaboration of the public. Anyone with information about his whereabouts can contact the agency directly through the telephone line 1-800-347-3756.
