Puerto Rico's highest judicial authority rejected the motions to halt proceedings and extraordinary remedies filed by the legal representatives of Anthonieska Avilés Cabrera, announced the head of the Department of Justice, Lourdes Gómez Torres, last Thursday.
With this ruling, the decision by the lower court is confirmed: Avilés Cabrera will be brought to trial for the crime of first-degree murder, related to the death of the young woman Gabriela Nicole Pratts Rosario. The prosecution contends that the defendant caused death intentionally and with full awareness of her actions.
Additionally, the determination regarding the defendant's fitness to stand trial has been upheld. This means that Avilés Cabrera possesses the necessary understanding of the nature of the charges against her and can cooperate appropriately with her legal representatives.
Secretary Gómez Torres reaffirmed the commitment of the institution she heads. "We will not rest until we deliver justice to Gabriela Nicole and her family," she stated. She also emphasised that the case will be handled with the seriousness, sensitivity and diligence it demands, in fulfilment of the duty to safeguard the rights of the people and those affected by criminal conduct.
