The prosecution presented formal criminal charges against Carmen Rodríguez Colón, who is alleged to have caused the death of Pedro Cruz Santiago, her romantic partner of three decades. The incident was recorded on 3 March in the town of Morovis.
Rodríguez Colón must answer for first-degree homicide and violation of firearms regulations. The magistrate imposed bail of 150,000 dollars, an amount she was unable to cover, which is why she was sent to jail.
From the outset, the detainee has argued that her actions were motivated by the need to safeguard her physical integrity. After being arrested in March, she recounted episodes of aggression that she said she had suffered for years from the deceased. She even displayed images showing contusions that she attributed to recent blows from the victim.
The woman expressed fear that Cruz Santiago would carry out a threat in which he warned her that he would commit the same act as his own brother: murdering his partner, an event that had occurred months earlier at a police facility in Morovis.
In response to this situation, Rodríguez fired at Cruz with a pistol that she carried legally. The man died during medical transport.
Electronic messaging conversations, which the news channel Telenoticias had access to, revealed the conflictive relationship. In one of these exchanges, the victim wrote to the now-accused woman apologising for his behaviour and confessing that his mental health had deteriorated.
Both individuals had criminal records in their histories.
