Peña arrested at his home following removal from office and corruption charges

Former president of Paraguay Santiago Peña Palacios was arrested on Friday by the National Police at his residence in Asunción, according to impulsobaires.com.ar. The arrest took place hours after the Senate Chamber removed him through impeachment for misconduct in his duties.

The charge was issued on the same date by the Public Prosecutor's office in the framework of criminal case No. 92/2026. The charges include breach of trust, self-dealing and influence trafficking committed during his presidential term.

Peña will remain under house arrest until he is turned over to the Specialised Unit for Economic and Anti-Corruption Crimes, where he is required to appear on Saturday, 7 November at 11:00 hours.

The arrest was ordered by prosecutors Christian Manuel Benítez Cáceres, Elena Fiore Franco, Silvia Margarita González Vester and Ruth Karina Benítez, a team that is acting in cases related to the Ueno Bank matter.

The same prosecutorial team also ordered the arrest of Carlos Dagoberto Carvallo Spalding, until recently president of Paraguay's Central Bank (BCP). Carvallo had submitted his resignation from the post on the previous Tuesday, at the request of then-president Peña. He will remain in detention at a facility to be determined by the National Police Command.
