One dead and three wounded in police pursuit from Reducto to Maroñas

According to subrayado.com.uy, a 40-year-old man of Dominican nationality was shot by police and three others were wounded—one seriously—during a car pursuit that extended from the Reducto neighbourhood to the vicinity of the Hipódromo de Maroñas, at the intersection of General Flores and José María Guerra.

The operation began shortly after 11 pm on Wednesday, when shots were reported at a drug sales point near Avenida San Martín and Guadalupe, in Reducto. Police units carried out patrols in the area in the hours that followed. Around 3 am, officers spotted an electric vehicle with four men on board driving suspiciously in the vicinity.

Upon receiving the signal to stop, the driver did not brake. The pursuit then began, with units progressively joining after hearing the police radio frequency: at least 13 patrol cars from different stations participated in the operation.

Officers fired repeatedly at the vehicle. Subrayado confirmed that the car was left with more than 15 bullet impacts on the sides, front and rear. Scientific Police recovered almost 40 shell casings at the scene.

The 40-year-old man—with no criminal record in Uruguay—died after being taken to a healthcare facility. A 23-year-old young man, also with no record, was shot in the abdomen and another shot in the chest, and remains in serious condition. A third, aged 31, suffered a grazing wound to the shoulder blade and was discharged; he has three records for robbery and theft. The fourth occupant, 19 years old and with no record, suffered gunshot wounds to the back and right arm.

Scientific Police surveyed the scene in search of evidence. The Homicide Department of the Directorate of Complex Cases is analysing images from cameras that captured the pursuit to reconstruct the sequence of events. All police officers involved will be disarmed preventively, and the case remains under joint investigation with the Office of the Prosecutor for Homicides of the second shift.
