People with no connection to Topos de México are taking advantage of the brigade's presence in Venezuelan territory to commit fraud. Following the earthquakes of 24 June, these individuals are requesting satellite communications equipment, tools and financial contributions whilst posing as rescuers from the organisation.
The genuine members of the organisation issued a statement to deny these requests. According to their explanation, when they deploy a unit to a disaster zone, each brigade has its own resources for food, communications and work. They neither need nor request material assistance from the local population or third parties.
The fraudsters are specifically seeking to obtain Starlink terminals, various supplies and cash. The leadership of Topos de México recalled that its missions abroad are governed by international standards that prohibit depending on the host community for supplies.
The alert was published at a time when Mexican rescue workers are participating in search operations in areas affected by the earthquakes. The organisation urged citizens to verify any fundraising campaign through its verified channels and to report attempted fraud.
