Venezuelan authorities announced the capture of three individuals accused of killing a National Bolivarian Police officer in the centre of the capital. The incident occurred during the early morning of 17 June, when officer Ciro Gavidia Iriarte, 33 years old, was travelling along San Martín Avenue.

According to information provided by Douglas Rico, head of the Scientific, Criminal and Criminalistic Investigation Body, those arrested were located in El Junquito parish. The group consists of two adults—Elvis Montero (21) and Deivis González (19)—and a minor aged 17. Investigators indicate that they approached the officer near two in the morning with the intention of taking his service pistol.

During the investigation, police officers managed to seize the weapon carried by the victim at the time of the attack, as well as the motorcycle in which the attackers were travelling. Analysis of the case revealed that the main motivation was robbery with the aim of theft: one of those captured intended to sell the firearm to pay off a monetary debt owed to a criminal organisation.

Following their arrest, the three individuals were handed over to prosecutors of the Public Ministry, who will proceed with the corresponding criminal proceedings.
