Kinahan appears by videolink at Special Criminal Court, remanded for one week
Daniel Kinahan, the 49-year-old alleged leader of the Kinahan organised crime group, appeared before the Special Criminal Court in Dublin on Monday by videolink from Portlaoise Prison, limerickleader.ie reports.
He is charged with directing the activities of a criminal organisation between 18 October 2015 and 6 April 2017.
Wearing glasses and a dark jumper, Kinahan confirmed his identity and told the court: "Yes, I can" when asked whether he could hear and see the proceedings.
The hearing lasted only a few minutes and was presided over by Ms Justice Sarah Berkeley, Ms Justice Caroline Biggs and Judge Kevin Staunton.
Defence barrister David Perry BL informed the court that solicitor Darragh Mackin of Phoenix Law in Belfast wished to come on record as Kinahan's legal representative. Mackin did not attend in person due to what Perry described as "unexpected circumstances that arose elsewhere", and sent his apologies to the court.
Perry said he was present solely to confirm the legal representation arrangement, adding that Kinahan was aware of the application and that there was a preference for him to appear in person at the next hearing.
Perry asked the court to put the case back to the following Monday to allow the formal application to be made, and requested that Kinahan be produced in person at that appearance.
Ms Justice Biggs replied: "That's fine," and remanded Kinahan for one week. He is due to appear again next Monday at 11am.
Kinahan was arrested in the United Arab Emirates on 15 April on foot of an arrest warrant issued by the Irish courts, under a bilateral extradition agreement between Ireland and the UAE. He was flown to Ireland on an Irish Government jet in August and brought to Dublin by high-speed Garda escort, where he was formally charged.
