A viable pipe bomb was recovered alongside two loaded firearms during a garda search of open land in the Rathmullen Park area of Drogheda, Co Louth, on Sunday, the Irish Independent reports.

The operation was conducted by a garda divisional drugs unit targeting organised criminal activity in the region. Local gardaí, the armed support unit, and local and national dog units assisted in the search.

A Defence Forces explosive ordnance disposal team attended the scene and rendered the device safe, a garda spokesperson confirmed. Officers also recovered a loaded handgun and a machine gun, together with a quantity of ammunition.

The seized weapons and explosive device will be subject to ballistic testing and forensic analysis. "Investigations are ongoing," the spokesperson said. No arrests have been made in connection with the find.
