Dublin District Court remands teenager over Blackhorse Avenue killing
An 18-year-old Dublin man has been charged with the murder of a Limerick grandfather who was stabbed to death in Dublin last month, rte.ie reports.
Jamie Bailey, 38, originally from Rossa Avenue, Mulgrave Street in Limerick city, was found with serious injuries on a footpath on Blackhorse Avenue, Dublin 7, in the early hours of Sunday 18 October. He was taken to the Mater Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Jaden Connell, of Belcamp Gardens, Dublin 17, appeared before Judge Michèle Finan at Dublin District Court on Thursday evening. He was charged with the murder of Mr Bailey contrary to common law.
Detective Garda Michael Lennon of Bridewell Garda Station told Judge Finan that the teenager "made no reply" when charged at 4pm.
Solicitor Conor Crean informed the court that his firm would ordinarily represent the accused, but could not take an active role in proceedings due to the ongoing legal aid dispute with the Minister for Justice. "It is not a position we take lightly; regretfully, we are not acting today," he said.
Judge Finan thanked Crean for his courtesy in stating his position, before explaining to the accused that the District Court has no jurisdiction to consider bail in a murder charge — such an application must be brought before the High Court.
Connell was automatically remanded in custody. He has yet to indicate a plea and is due to appear at Cloverhill District Court on Friday.
