KPSM warns of fake traffic fine scam texts circulating on Sint Maarten
The Sint Maarten police (KPSM) warn of fraudulent messages impersonating the Traffic Police and the Public Prosecutor's Office. Recipients are urged not to click links or make any payment.
Fake traffic fine messages impersonate Public Prosecutor's Office
The Police Force of Sint Maarten (KPSM) is warning the public about fraudulent text messages currently circulating across the island, 721news Sint Maarten reports. The messages falsely claim to originate from the Traffic Police and allege that the recipient has an unpaid traffic fine.
Each message contains a link leading to a counterfeit website built to impersonate the Public Prosecutor's Office (Openbaar Ministerie). The fraudulent messages impose a false 48-hour payment deadline and threaten additional fines to pressure recipients into acting quickly.
KPSM advises anyone who receives the message to take the following steps:
- Do not click the link
- Do not make any payment
- Do not enter personal or banking information
- Do not reply "Ja" or otherwise respond to the message
Recipients are instructed to delete the message immediately and to have no further contact with the sender.
The police force is also calling on the public to share the warning with family, friends, and colleagues in order to limit the number of victims.
