The attack occurred at approximately 12.05pm in the Peace Garden on Foyle Street. The male victim sustained leg and facial injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.

Three men were arrested in connection with the incident and subsequently released on bail while police conduct further enquiries.

Chief Inspector Ian Ferriby described it as a horrible incident, noting that it took place in the middle of the day when the area would have been busy. "It must have been a frightening incident to have witnessed," he said.

Police are asking anyone who was in the area between noon and 12.15pm on Saturday to come forward.
