Officers were called to the scene shortly after midnight on Saturday. Emergency services attended and transported the injured man to hospital with life-threatening injuries. He remains in a critical condition, GMP confirmed.

The arrested man has been taken into police custody for questioning. The incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) because the men had earlier contact with police prior to the fall.

Members of the public rushed to assist the injured man in the immediate aftermath. A blue forensic tent was erected near the corner of Liverpool Street and Southern Street as investigators worked at the scene.

A local resident, who did not wish to be named, told the Press Association she had heard sirens overnight and later saw the aftermath being live-streamed on social media. "I heard all the sirens, but I keep myself to myself so I didn't go out," she said. "I've seen it's all cordoned off and there's a blue forensics tent. It's sad, it's really sad. It's a bit close to home."

Chief Inspector Lee Gridley from GMP's Salford district said the suspect is currently being questioned in custody and that officers are working to establish the full circumstances of the incident. "We understand that incidents of this nature may cause concern within the community, however we believe this is an isolated incident and that there is no wider risk to the public," Gridley said.

An IOPC spokesperson confirmed investigators had been sent to the police post-incident procedures in Manchester in assessment mode to gather further information. "We continue to remain in assessment mode and will assess a GMP referral in due course," the spokesperson said. A scene remains in place while the investigation continues.
