Uninsured driver flips £55,000 Audi at roundabout after M56 pursuit

A 40-year-old man has been jailed for a year after rolling his £55,000 Audi A6 S-Line at a slip road roundabout during a 100mph police chase on the M56, the Daily Express reports. Hai Nguyen, of no fixed abode, survived the wreck and attempted to climb out of the shattered driver's window before Cheshire Police officers detained him.

Chester Crown Court heard on Monday that officers first spotted Nguyen driving the black Audi A6 S-Line northbound on the M6 at 11.30pm on 20 July 2026, with no insurance showing on the vehicle. A patrol car displayed a 'follow me' message and directed the driver towards Knutsford Services; Nguyen failed to comply. Officers made a second attempt to pull him off the motorway at junction 19 — again without success — before activating their emergency equipment.

Nguyen then accelerated to around 100mph and continued onto the M56 westbound, driving along the hard shoulder. A pursuing officer radioed: "He's aware of my presence, he's not reacted so I'm going to have to declare this as a pursuit. It's an Audi in black, the reason for the stop is no insurance showing on the vehicle and now its manner of driving. It's failed to comply twice to a 'Follow Me'. Occupants, weapons, vulnerabilities are all unknown."

As the Audi pushed further along the hard shoulder, the officer updated pursuit commanders: "Speeds increasing now, 100mph, still hard shoulder one mile from junction 10."

The vehicle exited at junction 10 of the M56 at excessive speed. When it reached the roundabout at the end of the slip road, it flipped and rolled before coming to rest the right way up amid scattered wreckage. The patrol car driver behind was heard shouting over the radio: "Crash, crash, crash junction 10 roundabout!"

Nguyen was the sole occupant of the vehicle. Despite the severity of the collision, he attempted to climb through the driver's window before officers intervened and arrested him.

At Chester Crown Court, Nguyen admitted dangerous driving and driving without insurance. He was sentenced to one year in prison and disqualified from driving for two years and three months.

A Cheshire Police spokesman said Nguyen's driving had been "incredibly dangerous" and had put other members of the public at risk. "Thankfully, the roads were quiet at that time of the night, and no other motorists were injured when he lost control of his vehicle," the spokesman said. "Despite the serious collision, he still tried to climb out of the car window before being detained by our officers."

The spokesman added: "Let this be a reminder that the rules of the road are in place for a reason and you will be caught and held accountable if you choose to ignore them."
