Bus hijacked in Omagh: man in his 30s arrested after police chase through Tyrone

A man in his 30s was arrested after hijacking a bus in Omagh, Co Tyrone, holding the driver on board during a police pursuit along the A5 to Strabane.

A man in his 30s has been arrested following the hijacking of a bus in Co Tyrone, irishexaminer.com reports. The incident began shortly before 1pm on Saturday in the Beltany Road area of Omagh.

A PSNI spokesperson said the man, believed to be armed with a knife, allowed passengers to leave the vehicle but kept the driver on board before driving off in the direction of Newtownstewart. Police pursued the bus along the A5 through Victoria Bridge and Sion Mills before it was eventually stopped in the Head of the Town area of Strabane, where the suspect was removed and arrested.

A number of collisions involving the stolen bus were reported during the pursuit, including one involving a police car, as well as damage to property. One man was taken to hospital for treatment of injuries.

The suspect remains in police custody.

The PSNI spokesperson confirmed that Fountain Street and the Drumrallagh area in Strabane remain closed and asked the public to avoid the area. Officers are appealing to anyone involved in a collision or who holds relevant footage to contact detectives on 101, quoting reference number 624 12/09/26.
