Child critical after fatal Dungannon home attack, one man arrested

A man was killed and a child left in critical condition following an attack at a house in Dungannon, Co Tyrone. One male has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.

A child remains in a critical condition in hospital following a fatal attack at a house in Co Tyrone on Saturday, the Irish Times reports.

A man's body was found at a property on the Lisnahull Road area of Dungannon at approximately 11am. A male was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder and attempted murder and remains in custody.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) confirmed that a woman was also present in the home at the time of the incident. She was hospitalised with non-life threatening injuries but was subsequently released.

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service said it received an emergency call shortly after 11am and transported a patient to the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children.

Detective Chief Inspector Robinson said on Sunday that the cause of the man's death had "not yet been formally established and postmortem examinations will take place in due course." He added that it would be "inappropriate to comment further" and urged the public to avoid speculation pending further updates.

Robinson also sought to reassure the public: "We do not believe that there is any ongoing risk, and at this stage we are not seeking anyone else in relation to the deaths."

Officers initially sealed off the property and asked members of the public to avoid the area while a forensic examination was carried out. The PSNI is appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Sinn Féin councillor Deirdre Varsani, who also serves as chairwoman of Mid Ulster District Council, described the incident as "a serious domestic incident." Speaking on Saturday, she said police had confirmed a man was dead, another person had been arrested, and a child had been injured.

"We hope that our homes are the most safe place for us but when incidents of this nature happen, it really does reinforce that everyone needs to get on board with trying to help society move forward, where people speak up and try to get to grips with what can be at times very serious incidents that happen in the home," Varsani said.
