Chris Brown spared jail for Mayfair nightclub assault
Grammy-winning singer Chris Brown received an eight-month suspended sentence on Monday after beating a music producer with a tequila bottle at a London nightclub in February 2023, ksla.com reports.
The 37-year-old had pleaded guilty in July to a count of affray for the attack on the dance floor of Tape, a private club in the Mayfair neighbourhood. Affray is defined as the use or threat of unlawful violence that causes another person to fear for their safety.
Video footage shown at Southwark Crown Court captured Brown being physically pulled away from the victim, his former friend Abraham Diaw, after striking him twice in the head with the bottle.
"The repeated use of a glass bottle in that way, especially aimed at the head, was plainly dangerous — it carried the risk of delivering a more serious injury than was ultimately sustained," Judge Tony Baumgartner said.
Despite acknowledging the gravity of the assault, Baumgartner ruled that Brown did not qualify for a custodial sentence. The judge cited his guilty plea and several mitigating circumstances, adding that while Brown had previous convictions, he had maintained a clean record in recent years.
Brown had faced up to three years in prison. His sentence was instead suspended for one year.
He left the United Kingdom following the brawl but was arrested in May 2025 at a Manchester hotel after flying into the city for a scheduled concert. During the period between the attack and his arrest, Brown had been free on bail set at £5 million ($6.7 million), which permitted him to tour Europe and North America.
Brown rose to fame as a teenager in 2005 and won his first Grammy for best R&B album in 2011 for F.A.M.E., with a second in the same category following in 2025 for 11:11 (Deluxe).
His legal history stretches back to 2009, when he was convicted of the felony assault of his then-girlfriend Rihanna hours before the pair were scheduled to appear at the Grammy Awards. Since then he has faced multiple arrests across several US states, and in 2019 was detained in Paris on suspicion of rape before being released without charge.
