Fifth suspect held over Meir murder as detectives question four others

A 17-year-old boy was arrested on Sunday on suspicion of murder and attempted murder, bringing to five the total number of people in custody following the death of a teenager in Meir, near Stoke-on-Trent, bbc.com reports.

Staffordshire Police were called to Brookhouse Road at 23:45 BST on Friday after reports of violence. A male in his late teens was pronounced dead at the scene; a second male, also in his late teens, was taken to hospital with serious injuries. Officers said on Sunday that his condition had stabilised and his injuries were no longer considered life-threatening.

All five suspects are from Stoke-on-Trent. The four arrested earlier — a 17-year-old boy, two 18-year-old men and a 20-year-old man — remained in police custody as detectives were granted additional time to question them. The three older individuals were arrested on suspicion of murder; the younger of the four also faces a suspicion of attempted murder, matching the charge against the newly arrested 17-year-old.

Detective Inspector Lisa Holland, from Staffordshire's major and organised crime unit, said the investigation had made "significant progress". "We continue to support the family of the victims at this devastating time," she added.

Officers remained at the scene on Sunday evening and urged anyone in the Brookhouse Road area between 21:00 on Friday and shortly after midnight on Saturday to come forward. Police are specifically seeking CCTV, dashcam, doorbell footage or relevant social media content that could assist the inquiry.
