Bishop of Lincoln quits as sexual assault inquiry continues

The Right Reverend Stephen Conway has resigned as Bishop of Lincoln while an ongoing police investigation into a sexual assault allegation remains active, bbc.co.uk reports.

Conway was arrested in February after Lincolnshire Police said it was pursuing "an ongoing investigation following an allegation that a man was sexually assaulted between 2018 and 2025." He was suspended from ministry at the same time, following what the Church of England described as a "safeguarding complaint."

His resignation will formally take effect on 1 October. The Church of England confirmed the departure in a statement, noting that disciplinary procedures do not end with a resignation. "The complaint process is ongoing. Clergy remain subject to church disciplinary procedures following resignation or retirement," the statement read.

Dr Nicholas Chamberlain, the Bishop of Grantham, will continue in the role of Acting Bishop of Lincoln until a permanent successor is appointed.
