Barton in dock over alleged attack on ex-football manager at Merseyside golf club

Former professional footballer Joey Barton appeared at Liverpool Crown Court on Tuesday to face trial over an alleged assault outside a Huyton golf club, The Independent reports.

Barton, 43, of Widnes, Cheshire, denies causing grievous bodily harm with intent to Kevin Lynch, 51, at Fairway, Huyton, on 8 March. The alleged attack is said to have occurred after the two men had been drinking together at Huyton and Prescot Golf Club.

Lynch, a former non-league football manager and founder of the special education school NexGen Academy, is reported to have sustained serious injuries to his eye.

Barton previously played for Manchester City, QPR, Newcastle, Rangers, Burnley and Marseille, earning one England cap during his career as a midfielder. After retiring from playing, he managed Fleetwood Town and Bristol Rovers.
