Two men have been arrested on suspicion of murder after a man died following a fall from a balcony at residential flats on Liverpool Street in Salford, BBC News reports.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said officers were called to the scene shortly after midnight on Saturday. The man sustained critical injuries and died later that night.

One of the suspects had initially been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder; that arrest has since been upgraded to murder following the man's death. A second individual was also arrested on suspicion of murder.

Because both men had prior contact with police before the incident, GMP referred the case to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

An IOPC spokesperson confirmed the watchdog had dispatched investigators to police post-incident procedures in Manchester. "After being notified by Greater Manchester Police of the previous police contact with the parties involved in this incident, we sent investigators to the police post-incident procedures in Manchester in assessment mode to gather further information," the spokesperson said. "We continue to remain in assessment mode and will assess a GMP referral in due course."

No further details about the circumstances of the fall or the identities of those involved have been released at this stage.
