A man was found dead and a child seriously injured at a house in Dungannon, Co Tyrone. A male has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.

A male has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder after a man was found dead beside a seriously injured child at a residential property in Dungannon, Co Tyrone, the Irish Times reports.

Police discovered the man's body inside a house on the Lisnahull Road late on Saturday morning. The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service confirmed it received an emergency call shortly after 11am and transported one patient — a child — to the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children. The arrested male remains in police custody.

Officers sealed off a terraced house in the estate and urged members of the public to stay away from the area. A number of police cars were visible at the scene, and a forensic officer dressed in a white suit was observed at the property carrying an evidence bag. A trampoline was visible in the garden of the house.

Sinn Féin councillor Deirdre Varsani, who also serves as chairwoman of Mid Ulster District Council, said police had confirmed that a man is dead, another person has been arrested, and a child is injured and receiving treatment at the Royal Victoria Hospital.

"Obviously, it has been upgraded to what we suspected would be a serious domestic incident," Varsani said. "Any time there is an incident of this nature it brings a great deal of concern. When reports come out that there may be a child involved or injured in any way, that escalates it in terms of people's reaction."

Varsani said it would take time for more details to emerge and for the community to be supported through the aftermath of the incident. "We hope that our homes are the most safe place for us, but when incidents of this nature happen, it really does reinforce that everyone needs to get on board with trying to help society move forward, where people speak up and try to get to grips with what can be at times very serious incidents that happen in the home," she said.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland has not yet released further details on the identities of those involved or the precise circumstances of the incident.
