Google News UK — Crime (en) reports that Staffordshire Police have launched a murder investigation after a man in his 20s was fatally stabbed in Newcastle-under-Lyme on Friday afternoon.

Officers were called to a collision between a red Ford Fiesta and a grey Audi on Orme Road shortly after 17:00 BST. The driver of the Fiesta was found with injuries consistent with a stab wound and was taken to hospital, where he later died.

His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers, a force spokesperson said.

Detective Inspector Stephen Ward said officers were working to establish the full circumstances of the incident. "We are working hard to understand more about what happened leading up to the driver of the vehicle losing his life," he said. "The investigation is still at a very early stage and we are in the process of carrying out forensic, CCTV and house-to-house enquiries to establish the circumstances."

Ward added that the incident was believed to be isolated, but that increased patrols would be deployed in the area to reassure local residents.

Police are appealing for anyone with information or who witnessed the events on Orme Road to come forward.
