Fatal collision follows pursuit on A439 Warwick Road

A man has been pronounced dead and a woman remains in a critical condition in hospital after a crash on the A439 Warwick Road near Stratford, The Independent reports.

Warwickshire Police officers attempted to stop a black Audi on Birmingham Road in Stratford at around 5.23pm on Monday. The vehicle failed to stop and fled towards the A46 before doubling back towards Stratford along the A439 Warwick Road.

At approximately 5.44pm, the Audi was involved in a collision with a white Ford Puma. Paramedics pronounced the male driver of the Audi dead at the scene. The driver of the Ford Puma, a woman, was taken to hospital and remains in a critical condition. A number of other vehicles were also damaged during the pursuit.

Both families have been informed and are receiving specialist support, the force said.

Because a death occurred following police contact, Warwickshire Police made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which has declared an independent investigation.

Superintendent Steve Flavell said: "Our thoughts are with the families of everyone involved in this collision and we're providing specialist support to them at this extremely difficult time. We made a mandatory referral to the IOPC because a death had occurred following police contact. They have declared an independent investigation and we will co-operate fully with their investigation."

Warwickshire Police said it would co-operate fully with the IOPC inquiry.
