Man stabbed in Eston as Middlesbrough reels from A66 crash and fatal house fire

A 39-year-old man is being treated after a bladed weapon assault in Eston, Cleveland. No arrests have been made as enquiries continue.

Bladed weapon attack in Eston adds to wave of violence in Middlesbrough area

A 39-year-old man is receiving hospital treatment after an alleged assault involving a bladed weapon in Eston, Cleveland Police confirmed in a statement on Thursday afternoon. Officers were called to an address on Sedgemoor Road at around noon. No arrests have been made, and enquiries are ongoing, the force said.

The Daily Express reports the incident occurred roughly two miles from the scene of a fatal crash on the A66 in Middlesbrough, where seven people were killed on Saturday 22 August. It also follows a deadly house fire in the Grangetown area of Middlesbrough, which claimed the lives of Natalie McDonald, 34, and seven-year-old Valentina Foster, and left four others injured. Cleveland Police said it cannot "rule out any links to wider organised crime at this time" in relation to the fire. Two men have been arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with that blaze. There is no suggestion the Eston assault is linked to either the fire or the A66 crash.

The head-on collision on the A66 killed two police officers and five young men. PC Matthew Blades, 37, and PC Tom Clough, 38, died when their marked vehicle was struck by a Volkswagen Passat travelling the wrong way along the carriageway. On Thursday morning, inquests were opened into their deaths.

Later the same day, inquests were also opened into the deaths of the five young men in the Passat: Cole Worthy, 17, Theo Rae, 17, Makai Saddington, 18, Michael Robert Cahill, 23, and Jakub Matusiak, 23, named by police as Jacob.

Police have arrested 17 people in connection with the A66 crash, charging two and bailing the remainder as part of an investigation into events leading up to the collision. They face a range of alleged offences. Four of the five young men who died in the Passat had previous convictions, police have previously stated.

The Grangetown fire occurred approximately one mile from the A66 crash site. Investigations into the blaze remain active.

Cleveland Police has been approached for further comment regarding the assault in Eston.
