Mark South has admitted 49 sexual offences against children following a complex Wiltshire Police investigation. Sentencing is set for 14–15 December.

Mark South has pleaded guilty to 49 sexual offences involving children, according to planetradio.co.uk, bringing to a close a complex investigation led by Wiltshire Police's Major Crime Investigation Team.

South had been due to stand trial before entering his guilty pleas. The charges include engaging in sexual activity with a child, taking and distributing indecent images of children, blackmail, engaging in sexual communication with a child, inciting a child into sexual exploitation, and causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.

The investigation was opened in May 2023 after a safeguarding incident at a school in Swindon. It subsequently emerged that South had targeted victims across a wide area of England, from Essex to Cornwall, blackmailing them into sexual encounters in exchange for money, trainers and vapes.

South exploited a network of social media aliases, burner phones and prepaid numbers to groom and manipulate his victims, according to Detective Constable Geoff Newnham of the Major Crime Investigation Team.

"South crossed county boundaries to commit some of the most serious offences imaginable against vulnerable children, emboldened by what he believed was the anonymity of the internet," Newnham said. "Over a number of years, he used a complex network of social media aliases, burner phones and prepaid numbers to groom, manipulate and blackmail children into sexual exploitation across a wide geographical area."

The investigation drew on specialist child abuse investigation teams, major crime investigators, digital forensic experts, victim identification officers and prosecutors from the Organised Child Sexual Abuse Unit.

Newnham paid tribute to those who came forward. "It is thanks to the extraordinary courage of the victims that justice has been achieved. I am particularly pleased that they will not now have to relive their traumatic experiences by giving evidence at trial following South's last minute guilty pleas."

The detective also issued a direct warning to would-be offenders. "It should serve as a warning to offenders who believe they can hide behind a computer screen. The reality is that law enforcement has the capability and determination to identify those responsible and bring them to justice."

South is due to be sentenced on 14 and 15 December.
