Nottingham driver jailed after 95mph machete pursuit through wrong-side carriageway

A 21-year-old Nottingham man has been sentenced to two years in prison after leading armed officers on a high-speed chase with a machete concealed in his car, westbridgfordwire.com reports.
Officers from the Armed Policing team began following a Volkswagen Polo on Perry Road in New Basford in the early hours of 7 August 2026, after the vehicle was observed behaving suspiciously. When blue lights were activated, the driver, Riyan Ahmed, of Glamis Road, Nottingham, refused to stop and accelerated away.
The Polo reached 95mph on Valley Road — a road with a 40mph limit — while travelling on the wrong side of the carriageway. Ahmed struck a kerb turning onto the A60 Mansfield Road, damaging a tyre. Officers used the opportunity to bring the car to a controlled stop, boxing it in at the junction of the A60 and Albemarle Road in Woodthorpe.
A machete in a sheath was found in the footwell of the vehicle during a subsequent search.
Ahmed pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, possession of a knife in a public place, and driving while disqualified and without insurance. At Nottingham Crown Court on Tuesday 1 September, he was sentenced to a total of two years in custody.
Police Constable Ryan Bullick, of Nottinghamshire Police, described the incident as "an appalling display of driving that put the lives of multiple road users in danger."
"When we pursue speeding and dangerous drivers in this way, our primary concern is always for the safety of the general public and all those involved in the pursuit," Bullick said. "Thanks to the professionalism and training of all the officers and control room staff involved, the vehicle was brought to a safe stop and Ahmed was arrested."
Bullick added that the machete recovered from the footwell had since been seized and destroyed.
