Woman charged after Nottingham officer shot in foot at city bus stop

A 27-year-old woman has been charged with firearms offences after a police officer was shot in the foot in Nottingham city centre, bbc.co.uk reports.

Nottinghamshire Police said the male officer was shot shortly before 04:50 BST on Sunday, after he approached a man and a woman at a bus stop on Angel Row. He remains in hospital receiving treatment.

Aisha Zaman, of Collison Street, Hyson Green, has been charged with possession of a prohibited firearm and possession of that firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence. The charge followed consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service, police said on Friday. Zaman has been remanded into custody and is due to appear before Nottingham Magistrates' Court on Friday.

Several other people have been arrested in connection with the incident. Two men, aged 24 and 30, and two women, aged 25 and 21, were arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. A 35-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman have also been arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and assisting an offender; both remain in police custody.

Detective Chief Superintendent Rich Bull, who is leading the investigation, said the public's "outpouring of support" for the officer had been "greatly appreciated". "We would just like to take this moment to thank the public," he added. Bull said officers were continuing to support the injured officer and his family and were "still following a number of lines of inquiry". Anyone with information has been asked to contact Nottinghamshire Police.
