Woman charged with firearms offences after Nottingham officer shot
A 27-year-old woman has been charged following the shooting of a police officer in Nottingham city centre in the early hours of Sunday 18 October, the Daily Express reports.
Aisha Zaman, of Collison Street, Hyson Green, has been charged with possession of a prohibited firearm and possession of that firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence, following consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service. She has been remanded into custody and is due to appear before Nottingham Magistrates' Court on Friday 23 October.
The incident took place at a bus stop on Angel Row at approximately 4.50am. Nottinghamshire Police said the officer had approached two people acting suspiciously when he received a gunshot wound to the foot. He remains in hospital receiving treatment.
Six further individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident. Two men, aged 24 and 30, and two women, aged 25 and 21, have been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. A 35-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman have also been arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and assisting an offender. Both remain in police custody.
Detective Chief Superintendent Rich Bull, who is leading the investigation, said the public response had been welcome. "The outpouring of support for the injured officer has been greatly appreciated," Bull said. "We continue to support him as he undergoes further treatment in hospital and are keeping him and his family fully informed of the developments in this investigation. He has asked for privacy during this incredibly difficult time."
Bull added that the charge against Zaman was intended to offer the public reassurance, while stressing that the inquiry was ongoing. "Our investigation team are still following a number of lines of inquiry to ensure those responsible are arrested, charged, and put before the courts," he said.
