Footballer Raheem Sterling faces charges of dangerous driving and laughing gas possession after crashing his Lamborghini on the M3 in May. He is due at Basingstoke Magistrates Court on 15 September.

Raheem Sterling has been charged with dangerous driving, possession of nitrous oxide for wrongful inhalation, and failing to provide a specimen, The Independent reports.

The 31-year-old was arrested after his Lamborghini was involved in a crash on the southbound carriageway of the M3 in May. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary confirmed the charges, with Sterling due to appear at Basingstoke Magistrates Court on 15 September.

Following his initial arrest, a representative for the player said he had been made to feel "worthless" and "forgotten about" in recent years.

Sterling made 82 appearances for England, scoring 20 goals, and was part of Gareth Southgate's squad that reached the 2018 World Cup semi-finals and the Euro 2020 final.

He came through QPR's academy before signing for Liverpool, where he made his senior debut. In 2015 he moved to Manchester City, winning four Premier League titles, five League Cups and the FA Cup in 2019.

Sterling joined Chelsea in 2022, but after falling out of favour he spent the 2024–25 season on loan at Arsenal. He subsequently signed a short-term deal with Feyenoord in February, making eight appearances in the Dutch Eredivisie.

In the 2021 Queen's Birthday Honours list, Sterling was awarded an MBE for services to racial equality in sport, a recognition that came amid widespread debate over England fans booing players who took the knee at matches.
