Sheffield man convicted of shooting 16-year-old in head on London Road

Tanzir Ali, 27, has been found guilty of attempted murder after shooting a teenager in the head in Sheffield, leaving him with life-changing injuries.

Tanzir Ali, 27, of Glencoe Road, Sheffield, was found guilty of attempted murder at Sheffield Crown Court on Wednesday after shooting a 16-year-old boy in the head on London Road at 5.15pm on 24 November last year, the Daily Express reports.

The teenager, struck by a single gunshot, was left fighting for his life. South Yorkshire Police confirmed the boy remains in hospital more than nine months after the attack, with injuries described as life-changing.

CCTV footage, reviewed by detectives during the investigation, captured the moment Ali drew a weapon from his pocket during a confrontation involving a group of people and the teenager. A loud bang is heard on the footage before the boy collapses to the ground. Ali then places the gun back in his pocket and flees the scene.

At trial, Ali told Sheffield Crown Court he did not intend to press the trigger and claimed he was unaware the weapon was loaded. He had earlier pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence, but denied the attempted murder charge. The jury rejected his account.

Following the shooting, Ali fled to Aberdeen, where Sharna Osborne, 24, of Duthie Terrace, Aberdeen, booked a hotel room for them using false details. Ali was arrested in the Scottish city on suspicion of attempted murder and firearms offences. Osborne was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and was found guilty of that charge at Sheffield Crown Court on Thursday.

Both have been remanded in custody ahead of sentencing, scheduled for 18 November at the same court.

Detective Greg Dakin of South Yorkshire Police said the victim and his family had been permanently affected by the attack. "The boy's family were forced to endure the pain of waiting at his bedside, not knowing if he would pass away from his injuries," Dakin said.

Dakin added that Ali had attempted to kill a child before fleeing hundreds of miles in what he described as a cowardly effort to evade justice, with Osborne's assistance. He praised officers for their work on the investigation and thanked Police Scotland for their role in the arrests.

"I hope that these convictions further demonstrate our commitment to rid South Yorkshire of gun violence," Dakin said.
