Teen, 16, charged with murder of Dungannon man and attacks on family ordered for mental health assessment

A 16-year-old boy charged with killing a 61-year-old man in Co Tyrone and attacking his wife and daughter appeared at Omagh Court. A judge has ordered a mental health assessment.

A judge at Omagh Court ordered a mental health assessment for a 16-year-old boy charged with the murder of a 61-year-old man in Co Tyrone and the attempted murder of his wife and daughter, TheJournal.ie reports.

The teenager, who cannot be named because of his age, appeared in court on Monday morning. A PSNI officer told the court she could connect him to the charges; the defendant's solicitor confirmed no objection to that connection.

Police received a call from a member of the public at around 10.55am on Saturday, reporting a disturbance at a house on the Lisnahull Road in Dungannon. Officers arriving shortly afterwards found the body of a 61-year-old man. His 48-year-old wife was also at the scene with non-life threatening injuries. Their eight-year-old daughter had sustained severe injuries and was in a critical condition in hospital; she is now reported to be stable.

The PSNI said that the "quick-thinking actions" of officers at the scene "gave the young girl a fighting chance of survival".

The defendant confirmed in court that he understood the charges against him. No bail application was made, and he was remanded in custody.

His solicitor, Jarlath Faloon, told the court that the defendant had made admissions regarding the alleged offences during police interviews over the weekend. Faloon described it as "regrettable" that the defendant had not undergone any formal psychiatric assessment prior to those interviews. He said there were "clear concerns" about the defendant's mental health but that there had been "limited psychiatric assessment during the interview process". While the teenager had been seen by a mental health nurse and a forensic medical officer, Faloon said that was "certainly not at a psychiatric level", and he requested that an "immediate psychiatric assessment be carried out on the defendant".

The judge confirmed he would make "an order for the authorities to conduct a mental health assessment". Faloon added that his office would separately commission its own assessment, describing the approach as "two-tiered".

An application for legal aid was granted. The defendant is next due to appear before Dungannon Youth Court via video-link on 15 September.
