A 58-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene of a multi-vehicle collision on the A8 near Edinburgh Airport on Monday morning, BBC News reports. Two women, aged 23 and 19, and a 32-year-old man have since been arrested in connection with the crash, which occurred at around 09:25 near Newbridge.

Four other people were taken to hospital following the collision but were later released. In total, four vehicles were involved, among them a grey Skoda Karoq and a Renault Captur, which was seen lying on its roof. The woman who died had been driving a Hyundai i30.

Officers had earlier appealed for information about the occupants of a grey Mercedes A250, who left the scene on foot after the collision. The three subsequent arrests appear to be linked to that search.

Sgt Mike Thomson said: "Our thoughts remain with the family of the woman who died. Inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances."

The A8 was closed for several hours to allow an investigation to take place and reopened at 19:05 on Monday evening.

Residents living near the crash scene described chaotic conditions in its immediate aftermath. Tom Brumfitt, 69, who lives in a row of cottages alongside the road, said he was in bed when the collision happened. "It was just mayhem. It was the worst scenario I had seen outside for a long time," he said. "There was an almighty bang, a van partly on its side and then someone running past shouting 'help, help, help'."

Another local resident, Paul Dow, said he was working indoors when he heard "several large crashes and bangs." Opening his front door, he found smashed vehicles scattered across both the eastbound and westbound carriageways.
