Three men jailed for life for stabbing father 22 times in Haringey car park

Three men have received life sentences for the murder of Gregory Catillo Volquez, stabbed 22 times in a north London car park. Two defendants fled to Spain and were extradited.

Google News UK — Crime (en) reports that three young men have been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of an unarmed father on a north London housing estate, carried out with what the court described as an "arsenal of knives" and a hospital crutch.

Benito Ramirez Kones, 20, Carlos Akum Metumbe, 22, and Luiggi Perelli Santana, 22, attacked Gregory Catillo Volquez in a car park on the Tiverton Estate in Haringey on 13 January last year. The attack took place out of range of CCTV cameras.

Volquez sustained 22 sharp force injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Evidence presented at Southwark Crown Court showed he had also been stamped on and kicked in the face by more than one of the defendants.

Sentencing the men, the judge said: "This was a truly wicked crime committed by very dangerous men. In my judgment, none of you have shown any real remorse for what you did." He added that "the violence inflicted on Mr Volquez in the car park was grossly disproportionate to any threat he could have posed."

Santana and Kones each received a minimum term of 23 years; Metumbe was jailed for at least 22 years. Sobs were heard from the public gallery as the sentences were delivered.

Volquez had spent the evening with a friend at clubs in south London before the two travelled north to Haringey and entered a flat on the Tiverton Estate, where they remained for 30 to 40 minutes. On leaving the building, they were chased into the car park and attacked by the three defendants.

Four knives — including a machete and a so-called 'Rambo' knife — were later recovered from two flats on the estate.

Kones, of De Beauvoir Estate in Hackney, was arrested in Swansea. Metumbe, of Lower Clapton Road, and Santana, of Brixton Hill, fled to Spain following the killing and were extradited later that year.

The court heard that two of the defendants already carried a string of prior convictions, including possession of a bladed article in a public place. At the time of the attack, Kones was serving a suspended sentence for possession of a locking knife in October 2024. Santana was on court bail, having failed to attend a November 2024 hearing relating to possession of a machete with tape around the handle — a weapon described as similar to one used in the murder.
