Three teenagers have been arrested following an alleged assault on a woman and her dog outside a Morrisons in Newhaven, The Argus reports.

Sussex Police said the incident occurred on Newhaven High Street at around 8pm on Monday, 24 August. Video footage, which circulated widely on social media, appeared to show the woman being attacked outside the supermarket before a member of staff stepped in to intervene.

A 16-year-old boy from Hassocks and a 17-year-old girl from Brighton were arrested on suspicion of common assault, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, causing unnecessary suffering to an animal, and theft from a shop. Both have been released on bail while enquiries continue. A 15-year-old girl from Brighton was additionally arrested on suspicion of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and remained in police custody.

Lewes Neighbourhood Policing Inspector John Adams said officers had moved quickly following the incident. "We have taken swift action following this incident and three people have been arrested," he said. "Our enquiries are continuing as we work to establish the full circumstances of what happened. We understand the video circulating on social media may have been concerning for those who have seen it, and we would still ask anyone with information or relevant footage to contact us."

The alleged victim has been identified on a GoFundMe page as Sarah Carron. The fundraiser, set up by local residents Sarah Edwards and Sarah Jane Woolgar, had reached £585 of its £1,000 target by Wednesday afternoon. In a message on the page, Ms Edwards claimed Ms Carron had teeth knocked out during the attack and that her dog, Hugo, was kicked repeatedly while trying to protect her.

"Sarah had some teeth knocked out and poor Hugo was kicked several times for trying to protect his mum," Ms Edwards wrote. She added that the incident had left her angry and that it did not reflect the community she grew up in. "I felt like I needed to do something to show that the video isn't an indication of the Newhaven that I know," she said.

The footage prompted widespread outrage online, with many expressing sympathy for Ms Carron and praising the supermarket worker who intervened.
