Google News UK — Crime (en) reports that three people have been arrested after a woman was shot with an air rifle on Windsor Street in the Thurnscoe area of Barnsley on Tuesday evening.

South Yorkshire Police said officers were called to the scene at 21:50 BST following reports of a person with a suspected firearm. The woman was taken to hospital with serious injuries and remained in a stable but life-threatening condition, a force spokesperson said.

A 26-year-old woman was arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder. The following day, a 28-year-old man was also arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, and a 37-year-old man was taken in on suspicion of assisting an offender. All three remained in custody.

An air rifle was recovered from the scene, and the force helicopter was deployed to search for a suspect. A cordon remained in place at the scene on Wednesday as officers continued their inquiries.

Detective Inspector Claire Moss, from South Yorkshire Police, said: "The thoughts of all those involved in this investigation remain with the victim and her family in the wake of such a vicious attack."

"I am thankful for the work of the first officers at the scene and emergency services staff who provided essential and immediate medical care to the victim," Moss added.

She said police were conducting detailed inquiries "to get a better understanding of the circumstances which resulted in the victim being seriously injured". Anyone with information about the incident was urged to contact officers.
