Two dead including child in Grangetown house fire — murder arrests made
Two people died and a 48-year-old woman was critically injured in a house fire in Grangetown, Middlesbrough. Two men aged 23 and 31 have been arrested on suspicion of murder.
Murder inquiry launched after fatal house fire kills two in Grangetown
Two men have been arrested on suspicion of murder after a house fire in Grangetown, near Middlesbrough, claimed two lives — including that of a child — and left a 48-year-old woman in a critical condition in hospital, Google News UK — Crime (en) reports.
The blaze broke out just before 05:30 BST. Three further people sustained non-life-threatening injuries; four people in total remain in hospital receiving treatment.
Cleveland Police confirmed that the two men, aged 23 and 31, were in custody. The identities of the two victims had not yet been formally established. The force said it was "keeping an open mind and cannot rule out any links to wider organised crime at this time".
Redcar and Cleveland Local Policing Commander Superintendent Emily Harrison said officers were working to "establish the circumstances of exactly what has happened". She added that a high-visibility presence would be maintained in the Grangetown area and encouraged anyone with information to approach officers directly. Patrols in the local area had already been increased to reassure residents.
Cleveland Fire Brigade deployed six fire engines and the Incident Command Unit. The fire was confirmed extinguished at 13:30 BST, though one engine remained on standby. Road closures were put in place and the public was asked to avoid the area where possible. The brigade said the incident was being jointly investigated with Cleveland Police.
Neighbours described chaotic scenes in the early hours. A 20-year-old resident named Ellie said the house was fully alight when she reached it. "The entire house was scorching," she said. "I couldn't get near the front of the house, it was that hot." She described holding the hand of a woman who had jumped from an upstairs window and remaining with her until paramedics arrived. Another neighbour, who asked not to be named, said their daughter "heard shouting and screaming this morning" and that dogs in the area were barking.
Floral tributes were left near the scene. Firefighters damped down the smoking roof of the wrecked property, and a ladder was propped against a rear upstairs window. Northern Powergrid staff were also present at the cordon.
The fire occurred approximately two miles from a separate incident on the A66 in which five young men and two police officers were killed in a crash on Saturday morning.
Redcar MP Anna Turley said the community had endured a "profound amount of heartbreak over the past few weeks". "I am devastated to hear of the tragic loss of life following this morning's fire in Grangetown," she said, extending condolences to the families of those killed and those still receiving hospital treatment.
Grangetown councillor Adam Brook urged residents not to speculate. "Many residents have been in touch with me throughout the morning, and I know there is understandably a great deal of concern," he said. "However, I would urge people not to speculate or share unconfirmed information."
Families of those involved have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.
