Google News UK — Crime (en) reports that an unlicensed motorcyclist has been jailed for 14 months after knocking down and killing a grandfather on a West Yorkshire ring road.

Reece Manley, 26, of Welford Road, Filey, pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving ahead of a trial that had been scheduled for July. He was sentenced at court on Tuesday.

The victim, Alan Lloyd, 75, was crossing the westbound A6110 ring road in Wortley on the evening of Saturday 26 March 2022 when Manley struck him while riding a Kawasaki EX motorcycle. Manley was travelling from the direction of the M621 towards the Wortley area at the time. He was riding without a licence or insurance.

In a victim personal statement read to the court, Mr Lloyd's family described the impact of his death. "Our Dad wasn't ready to go and we as a family were not prepared to lose him in such a way," they said. "We didn't get to hug Dad; tell him we loved him and say goodbye."

The family also spoke of the loss felt by Mr Lloyd's grandchildren. "Dad was a grandad who has been deprived of quality time watching Ben and his wife Nicola's children, Jacob and Isabelle, grow up," the statement continued. "From this day our lives have been shattered, the stress and anxiety that the loss of Dad has caused has been immense on all the family."

Detective Sergeant Nina Roper of the Major Collision Enquiry Team said Mr Lloyd's death had clearly devastated his family. "The actions of Reece Manley robbed them of making more precious memories with a much-loved father and grandfather who was enjoying his retirement after a lifetime of hard work," Roper said.

She added that Manley's riding on the night of the collision had been "clearly unsafe" and that his willingness to ride unlicensed and uninsured "speaks volumes for his attitude to the safety of others."

"We hope seeing him admit causing Mr Lloyd's death can at least bring his relatives some measure of comfort," Roper said.
