A woman and her dog were allegedly assaulted by youths outside a Morrisons supermarket in Newhaven on 24 August. Sussex Police are appealing for witnesses.

A woman and her dog were allegedly assaulted by a group of young people outside the Morrisons supermarket on Newhaven High Street at around 8pm on Monday, 24 August, The Argus reports.

Video footage circulating on social media appears to show two youths striking the woman and kicking her dog near the store entrance, before a male employee intervened to defend her and the crowd dispersed.

Sussex Police confirmed they are aware of the footage. "We are aware of a video circulating on social media showing an incident in Newhaven yesterday evening," said Lewes Neighbourhood Policing Inspector John Adams. "Officers are taking action to establish the full circumstances and identify those involved."

Adams added: "We understand the video may be concerning to those who have seen it, and we would ask anyone with information or relevant footage to contact us."

A force spokesperson separately stated that "a dog also appears to have been kicked" in the incident, which was captured on Newhaven High Street.

Police said further updates would be provided as the investigation continues.

The footage has prompted widespread anger online directed at the alleged perpetrators, alongside expressions of sympathy for the victims and praise for the supermarket employee who stepped in.
